Residencies to USA, Canada, and International (excluding Russia) curators and artists to create new work, research, collaborate, and study art in St. Petersberg, Russia. Funding is primarily intended for United States artists. Artists from other countries will be required to cover their own expenses. Artist residencies are four weeks in duration, and curator residences are 10 to 14 days in duration.

Each residency is individually designed to enable visiting artists and curators to learn about the Russian arts community, develop their own work, and share information about their work and other cultures with local audiences.

Financial Arrangements

  • For U.S. artists and curators, CEC ArtsLink provides international travel, visa support and health insurance (if needed), accommodation, and per diem.
  • For artists and curators from other countries CEC ArtsLink provides lodging at the residency space and organizational support. Participants must cover their own travel, living, and work expenses.

Review Criteria

All applications are evaluated by an independent interdisciplinary review panel comprised of international arts professionals based on the following criteria:

  • Artistic or professional excellence of the applicant's work.
  • Potential for the applicant to interact with the community in the practice of his or her art form.
  • Benefit to the applicant, at this time in his/her career, from interaction with Russian artists.
  • Applicant's plans for sharing the benefits of the exchange with artists and institutions in his/her home country.
  • Applicant's ability to meet cross-cultural challenges successfully.

Although preference is given to artists and curators working in the fields of socially engaged art and public art, artists working in other fields are also welcome to apply.

Term of Contract:

Residencies take place April 1 - December 31, 2020. The duration of the Residency in St. Petersburg for artists is four weeks and for curators 10-14 days.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

- CEC ArtsLink currently funds residencies by artists and curators from the United States. Artists from other countries are welcome to apply, but will need to seek financial support to cover their expenses. Artists and curators based in Russia are not eligible to apply.
- Applicants should be practicing artists and curators over age 21. Students and nonprofessional artists and curators are not eligible.

Pre-Application Information:

Interested artists and curators can apply by completing the on-line application form. Applications are available online from the end of October and accepted until December 16 (for residencies between April 1 and December 31, the residency is closed in August).

Back Apartment Residency awardees are announced by mid-February 2020.
